Hayhurst Neighborhood School Lego Robotics Team 2013-14
This year's theme is Nature's Fury. As part of the FLL competition, all teams will research natural disasters and
look for innovative solutions to minimize their devastating effects on communities. See the First Lego League site for more information.

January 19, 2014: Windy Warriors Win a Trophy at State!
The Windy Warriors had a great day at the First Lego League state competition held at Liberty High School in Hillsboro. They competed against 58 other teams. They had solid performances on the robot board, breaking school records. They were awarded the first place trophy for Innovative Solution on their research project. The team chose Tornado Alley as their community of focus and designed an app, the "Find Me" app, to help increase survivor rates. The app has two main features: it emits a stronger than usual radio wave that functions even if cell phone towers have been destroyed and it triggers a dog whistle that would give rescue crew canines a better chance of locating survivors. |

December 14th and 15th: The First Lego League Local Tournament
Each team competed against 19 other teams at their local tournament. Both teams had strong performances, breaking all kinds of school records on the challenge board. H.E.L.P. scored a school high of 240 points! The Windy Warriors came home with two trophies, one for their robot design and the other for being selected to compete at the state tournament on January 19th at Liberty High School. We are so proud of all the kids!!!
12/13/13: TIME IS UP!
We were thankful for the snow day this week because it gave us a relaxed day to tidy up our programs and our robot designs. It also allowed us time to make our runs on the board more efficient. We had fun singing our cheers, practicing our skits and signing each other's hats. We are excited about the tournament and hoping that our robots will behave. Time to feel the force and trust our teammates. Go H.E.L.P. and Windy Warriors! Good luck!

12/1/13: Weeks Eleven and Twelve
The days are moving by way too fast! We are making progress, though. We have conquered quite a few of the missions and have a potential for new school records. The two teams have shared all kinds of information and have both become better because of their "Coopertition". It's been awesome. We Facetimed with an expert from FEMA about our research projects and learned a few new things that we will include in our presentation. We have tremendous support from the parents of all the kids. We still have so much more to do!

11/15/13: Weeks Eight, Nine, Ten
We've spent the last few weeks programming and tweaking the robot design. Just when we think we have something worked out, a new glitch pops up. The engineer pairs are working well together and discovering new ways to complete their missions. We are beginning to fine tune the robot design to meet the needs of all the missions. We are also thinking through the board strategy and discovering new ways to earn points. We are a beginning to feel the pressure of not having enough time! The teams now have official names. The yellow team is H.E.L.P. (Help Every Living Person), the Green Team is the Windy Warriors.

10/24/13: Weeks Six and Seven
Even though we thought we'd chosen designs for our robots, we still had a few glitches. Both teams persevered, made a few critical modifications and are now ready to start programming. Each team decided on what missions they'd like to tackle and engineer partners are beginning to challenge those missions. The teams will need to design arms and choose sensor locations as they proceed.
We are excited to be programming at last! |
10/12/13: Weeks Three-Five
It is crazy how busy we have been. First we started by choosing a mission to focus on. Then we built robots to tackle the mission. Then we began thinking about the entire board and what the best strategy might be on the board. Next we started to talk about what we needed in a single robot to complete multiple missions. We worked in pairs to build and rebuild our robots, hoping to narrow down a design that could be used for all the missions. This week, we finally chose our robot design. What we discovered is that by choosing elements from all the robots, the final team robot is a better design overall. Now we need to build 3 more copies of the team robot. We are glad to have a final design so that we can begin to concentrate on programming!

9/20/13: Week Two
All the mat pieces are assembled and placed on the board! We began researching the challenges with partners. Each team of partners will explain their mission(s) to the rest of the team. We are beginning to realize how complicated the rules and chalenges can be. There's so much to consider in our strategy.
We divided the group into two teams: Team Yellow and Team Green. We'll change our names later when we know what our research project is all about. Next week we begin working with the robots! |
9/11/13: Week One
At last the season has begun! We began by talking about what the Core Values are. Then we discussed what "teamwork" means. Everyone shared their ideas and we created a master list to hang up in the practice room. After snack, we began building the mat pieces with a partner. Some of us had never worked together before but we all got along great. It's exciting to see the competition board come to life. The second day we continued building the mat parts and then watched the challenge video. Now we are really excited!
