Week Two
We had a great second meeting. The kids came prepared with their homework. We learned about the Mt.St. Helens eruption, The Colorado Floods, Typhoons, the San Francisco earthquake of '98, the Great Alaskan earthquake of 1964 as well as a few other natural disasters. The kids learned a lot from each other and struck information "GOLD".
They came to the conclusion that many of the natural disasters are actually caused by earthquakes! Tsunamis, floods (dam breaks), and volcanic eruptions. They decided they wanted to work on Earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest. They figured that it might be easier to track down resources in the community they live in, rather than pick one far away.
We will not be meeting next weekend, but will be meeting on Sunday Oct. 20th. I would like to make this a 2hr session from 4-6PM. If the meeting is over early, the kids can stay and play for a bit.
Here is the assignment due that day:
Study the causes of earthquakes and write down the causes. Find out what the Richter scale is and write it down. We are looking for something very particular in the Richter scale rating especially. What is it? Who will get the answer?
Each child also must start writing down some ideas of what they feel they can do to Prepare, Stay Safe, or Rebuild.
The kids will come back on the 20th and share findings and start researching what is being done currently to Prepare, Stay Safe, or Rebuild and compare that with the ideas they came up with on their own.
Please keep in mind, the object of the homework assignments are for the kids to learn something, take notes, then explain in their own words. While print outs of information are very informative, we need to make sure everyone has the same amount of share time and it is their own work they are reporting.

Week One
We had a great first meeting. The team took turns reading the Project Assignment
Nature's Fury Challenge(Pages 2-5)
We highly recommend the parents read this in order to understand and help the kids with their homework they will receive over the next several weeks.
Angie and I told them the rules for the Project meetings are... 1.Have fun (Most important), 2. Everyone contributes, 3. Never discount someone's ideas.
The homework assignment this week is as follows:
Research 4 natural disasters that have occurred. What happened, When did it happen, Who did it affect. The disaster could have happened anywhere in the world, at any time in history. Information sources need to be documented (Specific Internet Web Page, encyclopedia name, etc.)
The team will be expected to bring this to our meeting next week, share their information and then choose a type of natural disaster to work on.
Thanks for sharing your kids it will be another great year!
